The Lead Leather-er

mary savel owner and leatherworker at marysavel.comHey, i'm Mary.. the lead leather-er here at MarySavel.com and i've been making and selling various handmade goods for years. I got my start back in 2008 and since then, I've created many things like a woman's clothing line, i've designed costumes for a music video and created knitwear for babies and children, to name a few.

These days my current focus is on hand-stitched and laced leather handbags, accessories and homegoods.

I love creating functional and beautiful leathergoods that reference simpler times and that are created with simple methods. This explains my sudden obsession over basketry and how I can apply the traditional basketry techniques to leather.

LEATHER WORKSHOP

In 2014, I was lucky to have taken a workshop with Hermès trained artisan Bea Amblard of Amblard Leather Atelier. Here, I learned the traditional leatherworking techniques from a master artisan that have been used for hundreds of years. This is also the place that I discovered and cemented my love of working with leather.

LEARNING NEW TRADES

With the exception of that workshop, i'm mainly self taught. Teaching myself new processes is a process that I really enjoy. I often find myself in a Youtube black hole of how-to videos or at the library on the floor surrounded by how-to books on my latest craft obsession.
